Must We Refrigerate CBD Oil?

The majority of buying guides for CBD oil all have one piece of advice in common: price should not be the deciding purchasing factor. Why?

Because good, high-quality CBD oil made by reputable brands is not cheap. To ensure that the therapeutic benefits associated with CBD Oil are available in the final product, extreme care must be observed from planting to packaging. This takes time, expertise and expensive equipment, which translates to the product’s cost.

If you’re going to spend your hard earned cash on CBD oil, it’s important to learn as much as you can about its shelf life. This information ensures you get the maximum benefits and ultimately enjoy your purchase.

What Is The Shelf Life Of CBD Oil?

The length of time that items can be stored (opened or unopened) prior to being deemed unfit for use, consumption, or sale is referred to as its shelf life. CBD oil and CBD oil extracts have between 14 to 24 months before being rendered unsuitable.

It’s important to note that this range is not a given. Several factors play a role in determining an item’s actual shelf life. With CBD oil and CBD oil extracts, those factors include product type, extraction methods, storage, and what kind of carrier oil is used.

Storing CBD Oil

CBD oil degrades over time. You’re unlikely to get sick because it does not become toxic or dangerous. Instead, the degradation of  CBD cannabinoids and terpenes reduces the product’s potency. A rancid smell and murky or cloudy appearance are signs of CBD oil deterioration.

Generally, to preserve product integrity, storage instructions indicate you should store CBD oil upright and away from elements that contribute to the degradation process, which are extreme or excess light, heat, or moisture. A dry pantry or a dark cupboard is a perfect storage location.

Refrigerating CBD Oil

Keeping CBD oil in your refrigerator is another good storage option, but it is not a mandatory requirement. Some companies may even advise against it to keep their specially formulated products intact.

Refrigerators check all the desired storage checkboxes. They are dark, cold, and free of air. The cooler temperatures, however, may cause CBD oil to crystallize or thicken and get stuck in the dispensing dropper. This is quickly and easily resolved by placing the bottle under warm running water. Refrigeration may also create cloudiness not linked to product degradation.

If you took advantage of discount pricing and bought CBD oil in bulk, you can use a freezer for storage. Just be sure to place the items in freezer bags prior to placing them in the freezer. It’s also a good idea to write the date when the items were placed in the freezer. Freshness only lasts so long, even when items are frozen. Ideally, you should aim to use the products within six months.

When you are ready to use the product, simply bring it to room temperature. Defrosting should happen slowly though as sudden changes in temperature can alter the product’s taste or even ruin it altogether.
